Morphological characterisation of Skeletonema grevillei (Bacillariophyta, Thalassiosirales).
Increased abundance of Skeletonema grevillei Sarno & Zingone was observed in the Šibenik Bay on the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea, during January 2016. The genus Skeletonema was established by Greville (1865) for a single, today extinct species, based on light microscopy (LM). Today Skeletonema species are grouped into four morphologically distinct groups and, according to AlgaBase (2017), 20 are currently accepted taxonomically. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used to detect the ultrastructural morphological features that distinguished the investigated species. One of the most important taxonomic feature that points to S. grevillei is the siliceous ridges on the valve surface and the valve mantle. In addition, S. grevillei differs from most other species of Skeletonema by having a marginally located, long terminal rimportula process (TRP) and short intercalary rimportula process (IRPP). Also, the open shape of the intercalary fultoportula processes (IFPPs) and the way they link together to form chains, with knuckle-like junction that interlocks with one (1:1) and occasionally two (1:2) processes of the sibling valve. Terminal fultoportula processes (TFPPs) are open tubes, split along the entire length of the process, with irregularly truncated tips, which bear one or two small lateral spines. The ultrastructure of cingular band is distinct, composed of numerous copulae with thin, transverse branching ribs, interspaced by smooth hyaline areas.
