Mediterranean culture in processes of cultural mobility I - Rijeka’s canzonette fiumane

The aim of this paper is to research social reflections and functions of canzonette fiuman, namely, popular songs that marked the cultural history of the city of Rijeka in the period from 1880 till the beginning of the Second World War. Canzonetta fiuman is a kind of popular song, a specific cultural product created as a result of the political project of Italianisation of citizens, marked by an intensive political struggle for supremacy between the Italians and the Croats in the city of Rijeka, a highly perspective industrial town in the Mediterranean in that historic period. Canzonetta fiumana encompasses a wide range of meanings that are based on the interpretation of the canzonetta fiuman in the light of a music festival as an entertainment spectacle of performing songs, a model of cultural institutionalization that is in the service of political and ideological power relations of logocentric rival cultures, as well as the interpretation of multidimensional semantic and rhetoric layers of canzonette fiuman in terms of the “song as text“. In addition to this, the analysis includes the dialogic concept and questions relations between the canzonette fiuman and other texts from the same historic period, such as literary texts and folklore oral tradition. A special focus is given to the discourse of everyday life important for the semiotic interweaving of socially constructed meanings within class and historic paradigms conditioned by politics and ideologies.
