Topologically triggered CDW phases
In zero magnetic field H it is possible to realize charge density wave (CDW) transition by changing of topology of the Fermi surface, from closed to the open one, if the interaction (electron-phonon, electron-electron) is strong enough. In finite magnetic field system lowers the energy of closed Landau-quantized orbits by the Fermi surface reconstruction into the open one. CDW condensation energy in the presence of inherent magnetic breakdown is optimal for (approximately) the same wave vector of FS reconstruction as in the H=0 case. Comparing to the unordered state, two in principle competitive mechanisms (H=0 i H≠0) cooperate.
