Memory, Writing and Narration: The Flea Markets of Memory in Dubravka Ugrešić´s The Museum of Unconditional Surrender
The article examines the status of memory in Dubravka Ugrešić’s novel The Museum of Unconditional Surrender and its relation to the notions of imagination and writing. It identifies how fiction reconfigures our memories so they can become a part of the narrative pattern of our temporal existence. I argue that narration represents our link to the past, at the same time prolonging our existence into the future. As Ugrešić’s novel shows, narration as a product of the relationship between memory and imagination represents the synthesis that relates the past to the future and provides temporal continuity to our existence.
