Why Analytic philosophy needs history of philosophy?
Paper discusses two important metaphilosophical questions: (1) Is there any essential relation between philosophy and its history ; (2) How important is the history of philosophy for analytic philosophy. This is particularly interesting since analytic philosophy is usually very negative, even hostile to the history of philosophy ; it is usually seen as mainly ahistorical, dealing only with philosophical problems without any interest in their historical background. However, it will be argued that historical inquiry is intrinsically valuable for analytic philosophy since historical texts are relevant for the work on current philosophical problems by giving a sense for the continuous inquiry of some philosophical problems and to prepare us to go beyond the limits of contemporary discussion.
