The Meaning of Life

This lecture first criticises the most common approach to the question of the meaning of life, i.e. that of finding the ultimate reason for our actions. It tries to show that there cannot be such reasons and that such a search is dead-end. Instead of this way of viewing the issue, it claims that the question should be approached as common people take it and that the answer has to have therapeutic impact. Most of the ideas that take this path follow Jon Elster's presentation of this.
