Glow discharge analysis on hard surface layers

The ever growing sphere of industrial application of surface engineering technologies for metallic components means that more sophisticated methods are required for their characterisation. Conventional methods usually involve destruction of samples and time consuming operations. With the aim of reducing this time, and also of improving the consistency and reliability of results, new types of equipment have been developed. Recently equipment applying the glow discharge sourc (GCS) principle for profile analysis of surface layers has become avaliable, thus providing new possibilities for both research and regular quality control in industrial applications. As any method has its own peculiarities and limitations, there is always a need to make an objective evaluation of limits and possibilities during the implemenation of new analytical tehnique. In this study, use was made of GDS profile analysis to investigate layers of TiC, TiN, Ti(C, N) and Al2O3 obtained by chemical vapour deposition.
