Ahol a hagyomány és a kortárs művészet találkozik
The 51st PIF brought together puppeteers from Canada, Chile, Greece/Germany, Guatemala, Hungary, Israel, Poland, Russia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Croatia. Their performances focussed on such motifs as acceptance of differences, tolerance, the search for one's own identity, and the struggle to find one's place in the world. The puppeteers did not shy away from such difficult topics as peer violence, the death of a mother, or parental divorce. The international jury at PIF (Antonija Bogner-Šaban from Croatia, Nina Maliková from the Czech Republic and Edi Majaron from Slovenia) pointed out that the 51st PIF bore witness to the wide range of puppetry techniques, from classic glove puppets, to marionettes, and the animation of objects in space. The judges emphasized that the influence of the Academy of Art and Culture in Osijek was clearly evident in the deserved respect paid to puppets as part of the art of theatre. Graduates from the Academy, in their production Weave me, o my soul, Sevdah, displayed true magic with scenery composed of threads apparently coming from nowhere, forming a web over the entire stage, and the objects which seemed to be moved by some invisible mysterious force. The ensemble received a prize for the “live and direct performance of music which was of vital importance to the subject of the performance”. The main “Milan Čečuk” Prize for the Best Overall Production was won by the production Vanya by the Karlsson Haus Theatre from Sankt-Petersburg (Russia), whose director Alexei Leliavski also received the prize for Best Director, and the children's jury awarded their prize for the Best Performance to Frozen Songs directed by Tamara Kučinović and performed by the Rijeka City Puppet Theatre (Croatia).
