The role of emotions in our ethical and aesthetic responses to fiction
In this paper I examine the role that emotions play in our ethical and aesthetic responses to fiction. Philosophers have often argued that emotional bonds that the audience develops towards the characters keep them committed to the work, and attentive to what is going on, particularly in case of serial literary or television fiction. However, rarely are philosophers examining the role that emotional bonds have in the audience’s ethical assessments regarding the moral issues that a work puts to view and aesthetic judgments regarding the work itself. I take up this issue here, following some recent research in cognitive aesthetics, with the aim of examining the way in which emotional bonds influence our ethical assessments and aesthetic judgments.
