Speech acts and poetry
Up until recently, analytic philosophers have been sceptical over poetry’s relation to truth and its capacity to participate in the so-called informative discourses – those that can justifiably influence one’s beliefs. One of the most convincing arguments for such treatment of poetry was developed by J.L. Austin, who dismissed poetry as non-serious. Our aim in this paper is to examine whether such a verdict was indeed justified. By turning to some highly acclaimed poets, who saw their poetry as participating in the intellectual debates of their time, our aim is to offer a defence of poetry by focusing on those of its instances that invite the audience to take them seriously.
