This chapter is about the role of the first language in the 20th century second language theories and the change in the way this role is understood at the turn of the century. Thanks to emergent ideas about language as a dynamic system, the process of second language acquisition is now assumed as dependant not only on the first language acquisition experience but also on all of the learner’s language-related experience. Contrary to the traditional monolingual policy for bilingual development there is a growing appeal for a multilingual instructional approach in formal second language study.
