A Popular Music Form in the Construction of Identity. Historical Discourse Analysis of Canzonetta Fiumana

Popular culture as a specific site of the constant re-articulation of social power has become a relevant field of current research interests. It especially considers popular music, whose meanings are invaluable due to being deeply-rooted in everyday life. Popular music reflects sensitive moments of the transformation of a society, which help unveil social struggles for power and control (political) of authorities over cultural forms. This paper endeavours to reconstruct messages of popular songs with the aim of reconstructing the social imaginarium of the local Rijeka community in the period from the end of the 19th century until the beginning of World War II. The canzonetta Humana as a popular music form of entertainment is examined in relation to the city of Rijeka as a place of identification. Through its play of popular meanings, the canzonetta has greatly contributed to the fixing of the myth of the city of Rijeka and the Fkiman culture, greatly contributing to the understanding of Croatian-Italian relations. The methodologies that were applied are the discursive analysis carried out on the basis of verbal and musical planes of canzonetta Humane as a historical artefact, as well as interviews as recent subjective experiences of the Fiuman identity. The analysis was canted out on the authentic material and comprises a corpus of 50 canzonette Humane, while the analysis of Interviews was done on the basis of conversations with twenty respondents.
