Assessing the influence of pavement state on urban sound by opportunistic sound and vibration monitoring in cars
The quality of road pavements affects noise and vibration emission caused by tire-road interactions. Deteriorated road surfaces cause damage to vehicles, cause accidents and finally traffic jams. In addition, vibration and noise production increases. In this opportunistic approach, a fleet of cars has been equipped with low-cost Raspberry Pi boxes capturing location, noise and vibrations when driving. Using well- chosen test cars, coverage over multiple areas in Flanders can be achieved. An increased update rate of noise and vibration maps will be available. Known modifiers such as driving speed, vehicle and tire types are eliminated using regression techniques. In addition, the mobile data is calibrated using the established laser profiler methods. Machine learning techniques are applied in constructing road roughness models. Authorities such as cities are then able to plan more just-in- time repair of road surface using the GIS systems constructed. Obtaining nation-wide coverage is still an issue since local roads are much less frequently passed by.
