Towards the Standardization of Geographical Names in Croatian

Standardizacija imena u hrvatskome jeziku i dalje je aktualan problem, stoga se nekim aspektima te problematike bavimo i u ovome istraživanju. Dijalektna heterogenost hrvatskoga jezika zahtijeva da se posebna pozornost posveti imenima s dijalektnim značajkama i njihovu prilagođavanju normi. Usporedba različitih tipova imena upućuje na to da se najviše pitanja pojavljuje u vezi sa standardizacijom zemljopisnih imena. U uvodnome dijelu rada donosi se osvrt na povijesne pristupe standardizaciji toponimâ (posebno na purističke prakse, čija su posljedica bili preoblikovanje imena te izostanak odraza stvarnoga stanja). Za razliku od službenih zemljopisnih imena (koja već jesu dio standarda i kod kojih u suvremeno doba dvojben može biti samo naglasak), neslužbena zemljopisna imena mnogo su problematičnija za standardizaciju (nedoumice se pojavljuju u vezi sa zapisom, naglaskom te morfološkim značajkama, tj. paradigmom). Zbog toga se u središnjemu dijelu rada fokusiramo na neslužbena zemljopisna imena, i to iz različitih perspektiva: standardološke, onomastičke, dijalektološke, leksikografske, ali i pragmatične. Praktična standardizacijska rješenja moguće je pronaći tek nakon što se sustavno popiše (u dijalektnome liku s cjelovitom paradigmom) i opiše građa. Predlaže se da se standardizacija toponima provede u nekoliko faza. Prva faza bila bi oficijalizacija – tzv. oficijalizirano ime bilo bi pisano grafemima hrvatskoga standardnog jezika te ne bi bilo naglašeno, zbog čega bi bilo nalik službenomu imenu. U izlaganju se predlažu neka načela oficijalizacije (npr. načelo zamjene dijalektoloških grafema standardnojezičnim grafemima, etimološko načelo itd.). Sustavnom primjenom načela oficijalizacije uspjele bi se eliminirati dvojbe koje mogu nastati pri nedijalektološkome bilježenju dijalektnih toponimskih likova, pogreške, nesustavnosti itd., a s druge strane većina bi dijalektnih značajki bila očuvana. Oficijalizirano ime zadovoljilo bi potrebe mnogih korisnika – ponajprije samih korisnika imena – lokalnoga stanovništva, ali i kartografâ, službenika u administraciji itd. Konačno, oficijalizacija bi bila temelj za drugu fazu – standardizaciju. S obzirom na to da podrazumijeva uklopljenost imena u standard na više razina (fonološkoj, morfološkoj, sintaktičkoj), ona bi zahtijevala iscrpnu raspravu i konsenzus jezikoslovaca. Towards a standardization of geographical names in the Croatian language The standardization of names in the Croatian language is still a current problem. Therefore, in this research we are focusing on some aspects of this issue. The dialectal heterogeneity of the Croatian language requires particular attention to be paid to names with dialectal characteristics and their adaptation to the norm. The comparison of different types of names indicates that most questions appear regarding the standardization of geographical names. In the introductory part of the paper a review of the previous approaches to the standardization of toponyms is presented (especially of the purist practices, whose consequences were modifications of the names and the absence of the reflection of the real state). Unlike official geographical names (which are already part of the standard and in which only the accent may be questionable at present), unofficial geographical names are much more problematic for the standardization (confusion occurs in terms of graphy, accent and morphological characteristics, i.e. the paradigm). That is why in the central part of the work we focus on unofficial geographical names, from different perspectives: standard, onomastic, dialectological, lexicographical and pragmatic. Practical standardization solutions can be found only when an inventory of the corpus (in dialect and with a complete paradigm) is made and described. It is proposed that the standardization of toponyms be carried out in several phases. The first phase would be officialization – the so-called officialized name would be written in graphemes of the Croatian standard language and would not be accented, so it would resemble the official name. The presentation proposes some principles of officialization (e.g. the principle of substitution of dialectological graphemes by standard graphemes, the etymological principle, etc.). Through the systematic application of the principle of officialization, the doubts that may arise while registering dialectal place names, errors, lack of systematicity, etc. would be eliminated, and on the other hand, most of the dialectal characteristics would be preserved. The official name would meet the needs of many users – first of all the users of the names – the local population, but also of the cartographers, officials in the administration etc. Finally, the officialization would be the basis for the second phase – standardization. Since the standardization involves incorporation of the name into the standard at various levels (phonological, morphological, syntactic), it would require a discussion and consensus of the linguists.
