The youth, and the risk factors in family communication

This paper deals with communication within a family. It singles out the risk and protective factors in development of behavior disorders in adolescents, resulting from the manner in which parents communicate with their children. The research presented is a part of a scientific project "Intervention Models with the Aim of Prevention of Disorders in Children and Adolescent Behavior" conducted at the Faculty of Special Education and Rehabilitation, University of Zagreb. To this purpose 420 primary school pupils (7th and 8th grade) from 8 Croatian cities were polled in a questionnaire "Communication in Family", by authors Bašić J., Brajša P., Mejovšek M., Žižak A. The paper describes family settings and emphasizes the importance of "pure" communication as a requirement for creating positive environment where a child will feel secure and loved and have all preconditions needed for a successful development into a responsible and well-adjusted individual. Risks are described which most frequently appear in the communication (superficial communication, sending of unclear messages or messages directed to the third person, "you" messages, mutual blaming or accusing, lack of listening). The results of this research indicate the scope of these risks in a given specimen. Significant differences regarding the residence - big cities, county centres, smaller towns and villages - are presented statistically. The results demonstrate that there are differences in 21 out of 30 variables after having questioned the manners of communication in a family. The communication in smaller towns turned out to be somewhat more "rigid" than in bigger cities. Communication is an undergoing process and the skill to communicate is important for everyone, starting from the parents-in order to create a happy family-, to children &#8211 ; ; in order to successfully create social ties with their coevals and face the challenges of growing-up. Therefore, the emphasis is on the importance of making primary prevention programs oriented to the regular youth population in the form of training communicative skills, that is, at the population at-risk who should be offered targeted prevention programs in the form of specific trainings and education of parents in order to raise the competence of parents for the upbringing of a child. Differences obtained by manners of communication in regard to a size of the city where persons questioned live, indicate a need to expand primary prevention programs and their specific qualities in regard to various risks, targeted at the improving of communication in a family, and all others as well, throughout the entire territory of the Republic of Croatia.
