Psychogenic non epileptic seizure status – diagnostic and treatment challenge
Psychogenic non epileptic seizure status (PNES status) is a condition which could resemble epileptic status and are not a consequence of central nervous system disorder. PNES status occurs more frequently in women, especially in the second and third decade of life. Such patients frequently have an underlying psychiatric condition, sequel of drug and alcohol abuse or different types of sexual, emotional and physical abuse present at some point of their life. Due to their clinical similarity sometimes the distinction between PNES status and epileptic status could be difficult, especially in the acute setting or in patients with a history of epilepsy and previous epileptic status. Hence this could lead to misdiagnosing and treating PNES status as an epileptic status, often refractory to initial therapy, demanding intensive care unit setting and administration of general anesthesia. In this paper, two patients with PNES status will be presented.
