Digital Note-Taking Applications and Paperless Learning: Opinions and Behaviours of Students in the Hybrid Learning Environment

Informatization and paperless business is one of the key requirements of the digital market(s) of the EU, where people are expected to change their biological and other characteristics in order to adapt to the new working conditions. In some countries, the use of digital notes in a traditional environment has replaced the traditional handwritten notes by children from an early age. However, the results of previous research and practice show that a large number of students use notebooks and pen(cil)s for taking notes in class. The aim of this paper is to explore the opinions and behaviors related to the use of digital note-taking applications and paperless learning in a hybrid learning environment by 224 students at one of the Croatian higher education institutions. The results of this research show that most of the students have positive opinion(s) toward digital note-taking applications in teaching, but that most of them prefer handwritten notes for their learning. Also, less than half of the students think that paperless learning is very difficult and that the process of taking digital notes in class is not well supported by the existing teaching models in hybrid environment, as well as that the teachers’ role in this context is very important and that it improves the quality of student learning. Furthermore, most of the students believe that the use of digital note-taking applications in class depends solely on the students themselves, as well as that they have the necessary ICT infrastructure at their disposal, and they also intend to use digital note-taking applications in the future. The findings obtained in this paper can be the basis for further research in this area and can help all those who want to contribute to the development of e-education and the digital society.
