Volatile Compounds of the Endemic Croatian Species Centaurea tuberosa

Centaurea L. is a very important genera within the Asteraceae family, with many endemic species. According to the Flora Croatica database, there are 88 Centaurea species in Croatia, of which 30 are endemic. Centaurea tuberosa Vis. (synonym: Centaurea napulifera subsp. tuberosa (Vis.) Dostal) is one such local species and is found among East Adriatic submediterranean and epimediterranean vegetation (Scorzoneretalia villosae). The total yield of oil obtained from the speciment was 0.55%, based on the dry weight of the sample. In total, 32 compounds were identified, representing 83.6% of the total oil. The most abundant component of the C. tuberosa essential oil was caryophyllene oxide (27.8%), followed by β-caryophyllene (11.1%), docosane (6.8%), and spathulenol (10.4%).
