The Application of Microwave Energy in Durable Press Finishing
The impact of high frequency electromagnetic waves on curing process of cellulose fabrics, which have previously been impregnated with a crosslinking agent, is investigated. Cotton material is treated with conventional N, N 1, 3 dimethylol 4, 5 dihydroxyethylene urea (DMDHEU) and modified DMDHEU with low free formaldehyde content. Furthermore, a newly developed ecologically accepted formaldehyde free agent &#8211 ; dimethyl-glyoxalurea (DMGU) and citric acid (CA) is used for the experiment. Results obtained with the microwave treatment, where heat energy is transferred through the material electromagnetically, are compared with the ones obtained with the conventional treatment. Results obtained indicate that microwave treatment gives improvement of resilience effects, better tensile strength retention and abrasion resistance and has significant beneficial influence on formaldehyde release.
