Acute Stroke Nursing Management: A case Report

The World Health Organization defines the stroke as "rapidly developing clinical signs of focal or global disturbance of cerebral function with symptoms lasting 24 hours or more, or leading to death, without other apparent cause, except the signs of vascular damage". About 75 - 80% of all strokes are caused by blockage of a blood vessel by a clot. The remaining 20 - 25% of strokes are due to different forms of cerebral hemorrhage that occurs due to ruptured blood vessels of the brain due to high blood pressure, congenital enlargement and weakness of the blood vessel wall or arterio-venous malformation. Stroke is one of the most common causes of death and disability in the adult population. Stroke is a medical emergency. It is said that time is brain. Today applicable therapy for acute ischemic stroke involves the intravenous thrombolytic therapy. That means the application of recombinant tissue plasminogen activator, but only within the first three hours of stroke onset and if it meets the criteria NIHSS scale. Plasmin is an enzyme that breaks down fibrin, a protein that is a major "part" of a blood clot. This way the restoration of blood flow is allowed and decay of nerve cells is prevented. Thrombolysis leads to dramatic improvements in quality of life after stroke. In this paper we will present a case report of patient with acute ishemic stroke. There will be presented standard operative procedures with nursing interventions in trombolysis therapy protocol. Nurses involved in the care of patients with acute stroke must be continuously educated. Education helps preserve the skills needed for the treatment of patients with stroke and to keep abreast of medical advances for all types of stroke. An active and efficient nursing management in the first hours of acute stroke leads to increasing the efficiency of the therapy - and the recovery and rehabilitation.
