Soil Contamination by Thallium from a Cement Industry
This paper presents the results of measurements of thallium in the vicinity of cement plants in the Republic of Croatia (Umag, Pula, Koromačno, Split and Našice) in spring and autumn 1999 and in spring 2000. Thallium and its compounds come into the soil through emission from cement plant smoke stacks. The content of thallium in the soil was measured at three depths (0-10, 10-20 and 20-30 cm). In karst places it was possible to measure thallium only at one depth (0-10 cm). After the extraction with mixed acid (HNO3:HCl=1:3) thallium content was determined by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. The results are compared with levell of thallium measured in the control area without industry. Thallium concentrations in the first soil layer (0-10 cm) in the vicinity of the cement plants varied from 11.43 to 48.90 &micro ; g/g, and in the control area from 8.2 to 8.3 &micro ; g/g. The results reveall great contamination with this toxic element in the vicinity of cement plants, especially of the soil layer 0-10 cm. The concentrations decrease with depth.
