Possible Substitution of Conventional Durable Press Finishnig Reagents and Methods

Durable Press (DP) or creaseproof finishing has become very important in the textile finishing industry and will hold its position furthermore. Because of the high formaldehyde content usage of many different reactants has been abandoned. As a new class of ecologically accepted formaldehyde free DP agents polycarboxylic acids (PCA) have appeared. Their advantages have been known already for years but they are still not in the wider usage. Problems, which should be solved, are finding ecologically acceptable catalyst system and reducing the high quantity of required agents. This is possible to achieve with the usage of co-catalysts or accelerators combined with sodium hypophosphyte (SHP) whose effectiveness is well known. Great novelty of this paper is application of electromagnetic (EM) waves in curing process of DP finishing with PCA. Standard procedure of high temperature curing performed in a stenter frame was substituted with EM waves from microwave oven. Physical properties of cellulose materials after this treatment led to the conclusion that obtained fabric resilience is even better and whiteness degree has not been significantly lowered. This treatment has been tested only under the laboratory conditions so far but the first results are very promising and are regarding its future application.
