Swords as Symbolic and Ceremonial Objects – A View From the Carolingian Periphery

Swords had an important role in various ceremonies and rituals in the Early Middle Ages, such as oath-taking, investiture, gift-giving, and, of course, funerals. Therein they conveyed messages of power, status, or identity. Starting with grave finds from Croatia and contemporary, largely Frankish, written sources, this paper further discussed the symbolic roles and meanings of swords in the wider Carolingian world, with special focus on its southeastern periphery.
