Habitat maps in karst landscape geoecological assessment – example of Mountainous Croatia

The main purpose of habitat classification and habitat maps is monitoring, tracking environment changes, and nature protection. Such maps can also be used in geographic analyzes of more complex landscape units, whole landscapes and regions. Besides nature protection, they can be useful in spatial planning, impact assessment and scientific research. Since 2016, Croatia has new terrestrial non-forest habitat map. The geospatial database consists of habitat types determined by vegetation, land cover and land use. In research area there are classes: A - Inland surface water and wetland habitats, B - Inland un-vegetated and sparsely vegetated habitats, C - Grasslands, meadows, peat bogs and high grasses, D - Shrublands, E - Forests, F - Coastal habitats, I - Cultivated areas, fallow lands, and marginal areas with ruderal vegetation, and J - Constructed and industrialized habitats. The data were based on National Habitat Classification (NHC ; compatible with EUNIS habitat classification) developed by Ministry of Nature Protection since 2002. The data were produced by photo interpretation and fieldwork validation. In this work, the map has been used in karst landscape assessment on the example of Mountainous Croatia. This region is located in the highest parts of Dinarides and occupies 10.470 km2 (18.5% of land part of Croatia). High karst geodiversity and various geoheritage areas and geosites characterize the whole region. Due to the population characteristics and different development strategies there is variety of anthropogenic pressures and threats that jeopardize fragile karst environments. The assessment has been done using landscape and biodiversity metrics with purpose of landscape regionalization and regions identification according to preservation, potentials, pressures and threats.
