Quality estimation and chemical characterisation of water resources of Lepenci River by DPASV

Potable water represents an important source of water industry in Kosovo and its quality is currently threatened by a combination of human activities as are overexploitation, microbiological and chemical contamination. Potable and safe water is gradually becoming a scarce commodity, due to mixing up of huge contaminants through natural process like soil and rock weathering and anthropogenic activities such as industrial effluents, domestic sewage, garbage, over mining activity, explosive population, etc. In this work, the direct determination of zinc, cadmium, lead and copper in the river water was carried out by differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry at hanging mercury dropping electrode (HMDE). Determination of zinc was done using acetate buffer by standard addition method. Heavy metals were analysed at the operating conditions which are applied to the deposition potential –1.150 V –0.800 V for zinc and –0.800 V –0.250 V for cadmium, lead and copper. The concentration of heavy metals were found to be 17.25–77.40 µg/dm3 for zinc ; 0.012–0.42 µg/dm3 for cadmium ; 0.220–6.26 µg/dm3 for lead and 1.44–18.7 µg/dm3 for copper, respectively. The proposed method is simpler, more convenient and more sensitive than the standard method based on Flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS) and comparable with Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS).
