Hydrothermally-derived ceria doped with manganese in various amounts

Nano-ceria doped with manganese in various amounts was prepared via hydrothermal synthesis. The prepared samples were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD). It was determined that beside ceria, birnessite (Na0.55Mn2O4×1.5H2O) lines appears at diffraction patterns of doped samples. Ceria lattice constant and crystallite size were obtained through whole powder pattern decomposition. It was established that introduction of manganese decreases lattice constant and increases crystallite size of ceria. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis enabled insight into morphology of doped samples showing ceria nanoparticles together with birnessite layered formations. Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) was used to monitor samples composition revealing that beside manganese, the amount of sodium also increases. Thermally induced changes were monitored via differential thermal analysis and thermo- gravimetric analysis (DTA/TGA) giving insight in birnessite dehydration.
