The Professional status of rural women in the EU
Women in rural areas of the Eu make up below 50% of the total rural population, they represent 45% of the economically active population and about 40% of them work on their family farms. Their importance in rural economy is even greater, since thir participation through the informal rural economy is not statistically recognised. Female employment rates depend on several key factors: education and qualification level, motherhood status, family situation, number and age of children. Data show that women workers were generally more often salaried than their male counterparts, but important differences exist in the number of salaried workers from country to country. These differences reflect the distribution of jobs between different sectors of the economy, since women tend to be concentrated in the tertiary sector. However, rural areas are still dominated by the primary sector (agriculture, fishing), especially in Member States with GDP below EU-28 average, and that is why this trend is not obvious in rural women's wages.
