Generalised Model of Space Weather–GNSS Positioning Performance Coupling

Space weather, geomagnetic and ionospheric effects are the single major contributor to GNSS position estimation error budget, and may cause significant disruptions of GNSS operations, thus affecting quality and operation of growing number of GNSS- based applications. The existence of a forecasting model of the GNSS positioning performance due to space weather effects would mitigate considerably the risk of GNSS utilisation as an enabling technology. However, complexity of the space weather-GNSS positioning performance coupling renders development of a suitable forecasting model a daunting task. Here a contribution to the problem of development of the space weather-caused GNSS positioning performance degradation forecasting model is given through introduction of the generalised model of space weather-GNSS positioning performance coupling. The model encompasses all the processes involving in contribution to the GNSS position estimation error development, thus allowing for formal derivation of the forecasting model. Utilisation of the proposed generalised model of the space weather-GNSS positioning performance coupling is demonstrated through a case-study of the experimental statistical learning-based forecasting model development for the mid-latitude Adriatic Sea region in the Summer-time quiet space weather conditions. Manuscript and presentation concludes with the contribution summary and the outline of the implementation-related research.
