Borazane-mediated solid-state exfoliation of transition metal dichalcogenides

Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDC) of MoS2 type are semiconductive materials of layered graphite-like structure, whose electronic properties are highly dependent on the thickness with respect of number of layers. In their single- or few-layered form, they are recently recognized as promising materials for various applications. Thus, it is of considerable interest to develop efficient exfoliation methods, especially those which satisfy the principles of green chemistry. Inspired by previous successful borazane (NH3BH3)-assisted preparation of high-quality graphene sheets by ball milling, [1] here we applied similar method to a series of TMDCs of general formula MX2 (M = Mo or W ; X = S, Se or Te).[2] This work was supported by the Ministry of Environment and Energy, the Ministry of Science and Education, the Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency Fund and the Croatian Science Foundation under the project "New Materials for Energy Storage".
