Flexible crystals of cadmium(II) halides and 3- nitropyridine
Crystals are often described as brittle and inelastic solid materials that crack under mechanical force. But nowadays, it is known that there are single crystals that can flex elastically or plastically when external mechanical force is applied. Inside that kind of crystalline solids intramolecular interactions of widely differing strength, and regularly short crystallographic axis, as a result of stacking interactions, were observed. In theory, it should be possible to assign required structural anisotropy to a compound through careful choice of metal ion and ligand. The synthesis of single crystals of cadmium halides and 3-nitropyridine, their crystal packing, and how they act upon application of mechanical force is reported herein. The ligand was chosen because of the tendency of the nitro group to form weak hydrogen bonds, and cadmium(II) halides are known to form 1-D coordination polymers through bridging halide ions. The crystals of required morphology, needle- shaped crystals, were grown by solvent-layering.
