Steric and electronic effects in formation of co- crystals in solid-state and their sustainability in solution
Crystal engineering is today a preferable approach to synthesis of molecular solids of targeted supramolecular connectivities and desired topologies. Unfortunately, going from molecular to supramolecular structure is still not a very straightforward path. A complete understanding of relations between molecular structure and intermolecular interactions, i.e. how small and controllable changes in molecular structure (manipulation of steric, geometric, and electronic effects) can influence intermolecular interactions is still needed, and it will enable us to build desired supramolecular solid-state architectures. In order to investigate the role of electronic and steric effects in formation of co-crystals in solid-state and their sustainability in solution, several coformers were combined with cadmium(II) coordination compounds. The syntheses were performed by liquid-assisted grinding and resulting co-crystal products were confirmed with PXRD experiments. Given the intention to determine crystal structure, each of co-crystal was dissolved in several solvents to provide single crystals. It has been observed that in those solvents some co-crystals are not preserved which was correlated with electronic effects.
