Structural characteristics of flexible coordination polymers of cadmium(II)
Crystalline solids have for a long time been considered as hard, stable materials incapable of enduring application of even insignificant mechanical stress without breaking. But, it has been shown that crystals of many organic and for now, only a few metal-organic compounds, can give a flexible response upon applying mechanical force. It was observed that for organic crystals structure anisotropy and presence of slip regions determine plastic deformation, while a prerequisite for elastic response is isotropy of intermolecular interactions. Recently, we have described and quantified mechanical flexibility of a series of coordination compounds of cadmium(II) with halopyrazine ligands. It has been shown that the extent of mechanical response can be fine- tuned by employing slight structural changes. In order to deeper understand this phenomenon of crystalline materials, here we report on a similar class of coordination polymers of cadmium(II) with pyrazine ligands bearing the amide functionalities, capable of forming desired supramolecular topologies that allow us the correlation of slight structural changes with the extent of mechanical response.
