Solvatomorphism in copper(II) complexes with glycine and 2, 2’-bipyridine
Copper(II) complexes with amino acids and heterocyclic bases are often investigated for their antitumor activities [1–3], but they also build various architectures in solid state making them interesting system for research in crystal engineering [3]. Due to diverse crystal structures, such complexes are able to absorb/desorb solvent molecules in finely tuned environment [3]. In this work we report synthesis of two new complexes of copper with glycine (gly) and 2, 2’-bipyridine (bpy): [Cu(gly)(H2O) (bpy)]2SO4 (1) and [Cu(gly)(H2O)(bpy)]2SO4∙H2O (2) (Figure 1). Correlation between water content in the reaction mixture and the resulting product will be discussed. Unlike already reported complex [Cu(gly)(H2O)(bpy)][Cu(gly)(SO4)(bpy)]6H2O (3), complexes 1 and 2 both contain only cationic complex species [Cu(gly)(H2O)(bpy)]+ and do not contain channels of water molecules which makes complexes 1 and 2 more stable in the solid state. Complex cations are connected through π- interactions into 1D chains which are further interconnected by Ow–H∙∙∙O hydrogen bonding and bridged by sulfate ions through N– H∙∙∙O hydrogen bonding, thus forming 3D framework.
