Analysis of printing direction impact on dimensional accuracy of spur gears
In this article the authors analyzed the material deposition direction influence on the geometrical tolerances of spur gears. Gears were manufactured using the fused filament fabrication (FDM) process ; one polyamide (PA) and two acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) gears were made. One of the ABS gears was manufactured in vertical and the other one in horizontal position, while the gear made of PA was manufactured in horizontal position. The deviations were determined using both the contact-type and optical measurement instruments. The results have shown the biggest deviations in tooth thickness and tooth space width among all gears. Additionally, comparison between contact-type and optical measurement method is presented. The best dimensional properties are achieved with gear made of ABS printed in horizontal position. Obtained data may serve as indicator regarding capabilities of 3D printing in spur gears production process.
