Media Coverage of School Behaviour Issues: A Content Analysis of Digital Media Messages

School-related media messages are forming public opinion on education. According to Baroutsis (2016), media reportage on school- related issues has a role in the policy enactment process. This research was placed within the framework of the current educational reform in the Republic of Croatia which is an extension of the educational policy changes which started in 2000 with the European integration process (Žiljak, 2007). Literature review conducted for the purpose of this study revealed the research studies on media coverage of school behaviour issues that may be grouped into three categories: (a) media coverage and its influence on public opinion and educational policy, (b) content analysis of the media messages focusing on school behaviour issues ; and (c) media coverage of the school violence and the later incidents of violence. This study has a goal to determine the prevalence and analyse the content of the school behaviour related media items in selected online portals in Croatia. For the purpose of this study, the online editions of the four most popular newspapers were selected in accordance with website ranking for the category news and media (SimilarWeb LTD, 2014- 2019). The reviewed newspaper articles which were selected based on the relevant thematic keywords for the time period from 2014 to 2019, were analysed by the use of content analysis method (Krippendorff, 2004). The study findings were presented in relation to the dominant themes and message conveyed. The presented research details the dominant media frames about school behaviour issues in Croatian news in the last five years. This study's findings could be used to inform educational policy and practice.
