Teachers in Croatia - New Educational Aims

The process of social transformation must begin with changes in education, since education has a crucial impact on excellence, innovation and social cohesion. In terms of long-term progress of the European Union as a community, teacher education becomes the priority within the scope of life-long learning. The chapter aims at answering which teacher competences are essential in contemporary education, suggesting that those include future-oriented thinking, critical and creative thinking, classroom management skills and responsible decision-making. The selection is based on the social request that a teacher should be able to create a supportive school culture while bearing in mind each pupil's future aspects, as well as their own professional development. In addition, teachers should be able to think critically and creatively, and to manage the teaching process in an effective and responsible way.
