Psychological adjustment of mothers of children with disabilities
Having a child with developmental problems is always stressful for their parents who are taking care of them, especially for mothers. Under difficult circumstances and beyond one's ability of adaptation, stress would be spread to every aspect of life and would lead the person to show an adaptive or nonadaptive response. The aim of the study was to investigate the impact of care for child with developmental disabilities on mother’s psychological adjustment. A cross – sectional study was performed among 100 mothers of children with disabilities, aged from 22 to 55 years old. Participants completed a battery of measures including a demographics questionnaire, the Clinical Scale for the Self- assessment of Irritability, the Caregiver’s Burden Scale, and the Impact of the child on the family functioning questionnaire. The results showed that mothers of children with disabilities are prone to emotional-related problems such as depression, anxiety and different aspect of irritability. Unemployed mothers of children with disabilities have higher depression level compared to employed mothers. Moreover, mothers having more than two children perceive more negative impact of children with disabilities on social life compared to those having less than two children. The results of this study indicate that most of the mothers having children with disabilities need psychological and social support in taking care for child with disabilities.
