Dietary habits of patients with cardiovascular disease

The aims of the study are: a) determine dietary habits of patients with cardiovascular disease, b) establish a degree of education of patients about the importance of Mediterranean diet in cardiovascular disease, c) determine satisfaction of patients with Mediterranean menus offered at University hospital Dubrava. The research covered 62 patients with cardiovascular disease, 46 male and 16 female, from Zagreb and surroundings. The patients were aged from 32 to 85, meaning that the average age is 58. Patients have been offered colourful platters of food (except wine), which are the basis of Mediterranean diet. Dietary habits were assessed by the method of interviewing the patients about their frequency of consumption of some particular types of food within one month. The yes/no questionnaire monitored degrees of knowledge about the influence of Mediterranean diet on health and satisfaction of patients with Mediterranean menus. Obtained results have pointed that despite of Croatia’s advantage of a Mediterranean country, 45% of patients declared that they learned of that particular kind of nutrition at University hospital Dubrava ; furthermore, 68% of patients understand the favourable influence of the Mediterranean diet on health. However, if they could choose between Mediterranean and standard (classic) meals, the equal numbers of patients would choose each of the two. On the basis of results obtained through this survey, we can conclude that dietary habits of patients are typical for the continental population. Knowledge, personal attitudes, private individual food production, tradition and economic power, have strong influence of food choice and preparation of food.
