The effect of a lifestyle intervention on glycemic control in adults with diabetes type 2 six month after daily hospital

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of lifestyle interventions in patients with type 2 diabetes on the value of glycated hemoglobin HbA1c, plasma glucose level and lipid profile after 6 months. Materials and Methods: This study was designed as observational, prospective study. Patients who visited Daily hospital at the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolic Disorders, Dubrava University Hospital and had non-regulated diabetes mellitus, defined as HbA1c ≥ 7, 5% were included in the study. Patients attended a five-day program of diabetes self-management education in Daily hospital. Patients were invited on control medical examination after six months. A successful patient was considered to reach HbA1c < 7% and plasma glucose < 7 mmol/L. Results: The study included 69 patients: median age 63, 3 ± 9, 8 years ; plasma glucose levels 11, 8 ± 4, 4 mmol/L ; HbA1c 9, 4 ± 1, 6 % ; body weight 91, 1 ± 21, 5 kg ; BMI 32, 4 ± 7, 0 kg/m2 ; waist circumference 107, 3 ± 15, 0 cm ; triglycerides 2, 2 ± 2, 5 mmol/L ; LDL 3, 0 ± 1, 1 mmol/L ; HDL 1, 2 ± 0, 3 mmol/L and total cholesterol 5, 1 ± 1, 3 mmol/L. On average, patients had 5, 6 ± 2, 6 diagnoses and used 5, 7 ± 2, 6 medicines. The study showed statistically significant results in lowering levels of plasma glucose (p = 0, 002), HbA1c (p < 0, 001), and triglycerides (p = 0, 002) while the other parameters showed a descending trend, but no statistically significant results. From the sociodemographic and clinical factors, only sex differences had a statistically significant influence on lowering levels of HbA1c. Men were more successful than women. Conclusion: Education and lifestyle interventions have success in lowering plasma glucose and HbA1c levels which could result in decreased incidence of complications, improved quality of life and reduced treatment costs.
