Archaeology in school - school for life

Within the program of science popularization of the Institute of Archeology, various activities are held through which archeology as science is presented to the general public, especially to the children of school age. The main part of the program is working with children and encompassing two educational levels. In order to get closer to the Roman era, lectures and workshops on "Roman Everyday Life - Game and Learning" were created, which fit in with the history program for secondary and primary schools. Through the project, in cooperation with gymnasiums and vocational schools, we developed various workshops on subjects such as diet in Roman times, Roman medicine, school or clothing. Secondary school pupils are trained by scientists from the Institute of Archeology, as well as other Croatian and European scientific institutions. Then they present their knowledge at workshops for elementary school, especially the fifth grade. At those workshops, scientists retreat to the background, and students transfer their newly acquired knowledge to the audience. This approach gave us the concept of learning through entertainment. Secondary school students also develop skills such as public speaking, gain self-confidence, and develop creativity. Within the program of science popularization, there is a program, – called Diet in Rome adapted to vocational schools, especially for cooks and confectioners, but also to other future touristic workers (eg. waiters). Through the program students learn how to prepare, serve and present the Roman food. This part of the program is also adapted for adults who can expand the tourist offer on a specific destination (eg. NP Krka). Some of the workshops have been adapted and held at archaeological and historical events such as Ides of Burnum, Roman Night in Narona, Days of Diocletian, Antique Days on Mirine (Omišalj, Krk Island), Colentum Night, Night of the museum, etc.
