Egypt and the southern Levant nomadic populations: the dynamics of relations during Late Bronze/Early Iron Age
Southern Levant witnessed many changes in its political and social structures during the transition from the Bronze Age into the Iron Age. Textual evidence points to Egyptian involvement in the area, but there is no clear image of the character of the relations between Egypt and the local population. Recent archaeological investigations support the notion that the region was occupied by pastoral nomadic societies. In what way did the pastoral nomadic population affect Egyptian interests? Was the nomadic population related to the production and trade of metal? How did the environmental conditions affect trade? This paper will provide several models of explanation and offer better insights into the dynamic of relations between Egypt and the nomadic populations of southern Levant in the Late Bronze/Early Iron Age by utilising comparative analytical methodology of all of the available data: Egyptian documents, Biblical accounts, and archaeological and environmental data.
