Monitoring of microbiological hazards through the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) and Croatian Urgent Warning System for Food and Feed as tool for risk assessment

Modern food safety systems of countries in the European Union and beyond, including the United States and Australia and New Zealand, are based on a preventive approach, taking into account the scientifically based risk assessment regarding food borne diseases as the basis for making decisions. One of the main tools for the exchange of this information is good communication between risk assessors and risk managers, where the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) is certainly one of the first tools to assist in this communication. The paper compared the data about microbiological hazards in food and feed from the EU RASFF system and the Croatian System of Urgent Warning Systems for Food and Feed in the past four years. From these results we can conclude that the monitoring of trends in the field of collecting data on unsafe food and feed and preliminary identification of hazards is of great importance for preventive measures and actions by the risk managers. Based on this, it is possible to respond quickly in a short time, which is of particular importance when it comes to the protection of consumer health.
