Competitive tolerance of skin homografts in adult separated rat parabionts

Blood cells exchanged between parabionts after the establishment of vascularain astomoses may survive and cause "parabiotic disease", a fatal condition ascribed to production of antibodies by transplanted blood cells. The similarity between "parabioticdisease" and other conditions such as "runtdisease" and" secondary disease" has already been pointed out. All hosts unable to destroy the graft from their partner and weighing 160g. or less die of this disease. An analysis of results reported previously revealed a statistically significant positive correlation between survival time of tolerant hosts and their body-weigh(age). We decided, therefore, to perform a series of experiments on adult animals. An interesting result was obtained indicating that tolerance to homografts is not necessarily connected with fatal mani festations of "parabioticdisease" and that in adult parabionts the lethal outcome is not a sine qua non of tolerance. We also intended to find out whether by varying the duration of parabiotic union an increase in percentage of tolerant animals could be obtained.
