Planing peripheral using urbanscape emanation for creating vibrant cities
The periphery of cities acts as a space for confrontation, as a space between different realities – natural vs. urban. Peripheral (concerned with relatively minor, irrelevant, or superficial aspects of the subject in question) differs from periphery – it is an unpredictable and often unwanted result of the urban growth. It consists of untouched spaces, unfinished landscapes of negative connotations but for the city they are its integral part. This research is focused on re-stitching urban peripheral in the specific areas of the East Coast Adriatic cities. Rijeka and Dubrovnik are explored through their most sensitive space, which is the contactscape of the city and nature. These cities differ by historical development, heritage protection status and contemporary life, but similar in the need of re-stitching their peripheral. Urban growth is repressed by both sea coast and mountain hinterland, and it is necessary to change peripheral relationships. The periphery in general is more than just a perimeter of a place, it is also above all the point between different territorial (and sometimes mental) realities: Rijeka with disappearing industry and Dubrovnik overcrowded with tourism, both in-between seascape and mountainscape. The aim is to study the peripheralscape of Rijeka and Dubrovnik which have a latent opportunity to become an urbanscape. Research shows how to achieve urbanscape design with the help of urbanscape emanation as a concept that exposes space impressions, modifies insights, and examines the addition of time and structure to space. The goal is to enable transition from static city models to dynamic city models. Peripheral integration transforms static unplanned peripheral and makes Rijeka and Dubrovnik vibrant cities. Rijeka and Dubrovnik can become vibrant cities when their peripheral become transformed into locus amoenus, charming and idealised place of safety and comfort. This research offers a creative concept that uses allusion and illusions, so the game and humour are always at the beginning of a long journey of thinking about the possibilities of planning.
