Aesthetics of the City: Artistic Practices in the Development of Local Democracy

The aesthetics of city is the concept of inclusion of art practices in the development of local democracy. Art sets the fundamental issues that politics (executive power) can not or does not want to set up without causing social conflicts. Therefore, through art practices the fundamental problems of society can be problematized: the power of art is that it is perceived as "not serious" because it is a picture of the world, instead of the real world. As much as it is so, in that "not serious" position lies its seriousness. Therefore, parallel with the closed concept of art (theater, museum, cinema, concert hall), it is necessary to open art to public areas, streets and squares so that basic social issues can be sensitized at the audience. Such a way of artistic practices engaging was most directly reflected in1968 student protests in Paris when aesthetics of city experienced its flourish because the "beauty is on the street" (la beauté est dans la rue). There fore, culture is the most powerful medium of representation of the fundamental social problems and that's why art practices must increasingly come to life on public surfaces as an open concept of democratic representation which is poorly developed in Croatia. Multiculturalism and recognition of the "other" and "different" should be developed first and foremost through art practices that sensitize the public for such issues. The presentation is based on the influence of architecture, on the example of the Yugoslav modernist architecture on the development of local democracy in smaller cities and places.
