Cellular cementum of human teeth with chronic periapical disease: SEM and mineral analysis
Cellular cementum plays an important role in chronic periapical disease and repair following endodontic treatmentt. Ten root apices of human teeth with chronic periapical disease were obtained at apicectomy. After preparation, the specimens were observed under (SEM) and chemical microanalysis was made of the mineral cintent of apical cellular cementum. The rusltas revealed very heterogeneous resorptive alterations on the surface of cellular cementum which could not be correlated with eighter age of patient or the size of the periapical lesion. The finding of small globules within particular resorptive lacune awas considered significant. These consisted of mineral layers with significantly higer rates of calcium and phosphorous than sorrounding hard tissue. These were interpreted as deposites of new mineral into the resorptive area and an attempt at repair.
