Bilingualism and second language learning effects on lexical access in the second language
In this study two tasks were given to a group of bilingual German-Croatian speakers, proficient German speakers (Croats) and a group of German language learners. The first task was the Flanker task (non-verbal) and the second was a variant of a Stroop task. The verbal and a non-verbal tasks were given in order to see whether the well known worse performance of bilingual speakers in lexical access tasks could be explained by the need for cognitive control of both languages or weaker links due to lesser exposure to each of the languages.
