‘I’m Beginning a New Life’: The (Im)possibility of Beginning or Ending in Larisa Shepit'ko’s Wings and Pavel Chukhrai’s The Thief
The article analyzes two films, Larisa Shepytko’s Wings (1966) and Pavel Chukhrai’s The Thief (1997) from the point of view of the poetics of (traumatic) past as the source of the present, which both film reverberate. In the theoretical framework of concepts such as trauma, (post)memory and uncanny, the analysis aims to answer the following questions. Is there, after the historical trauma of the Second World War (or the Great Patriotic War), any meaning to talk not only about the future, but also about the present – if the so- called “hot history” (Chris Lorenz) haunts the person to the extent that it completely shapes his or her life? How does the time “return”? Where is trauma located? What is the epistemological necessity of the affective conceptualization of the past in contemporary art and science?
