EMDR therapy in alleviating psychological consequences associated with childhood maltreatment
Numerous studies have shown a relationship between childhood maltreatment and a host of adult psychological problems. The aim of the study was to describe the application of Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) to address the psychological stress symptoms in a female adolescent who had experienced multi- type maltreatment in childhood. EMDR is a psychotherapeutic intervention that is based on the reprocessing and desensitization of symptoms related to traumatic stress experiences during bilateral stimulation. This study presents the case of 23-year-old female with a diagnosis of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The EMDR psychotherapy procedure is provided with a detailed description of the identification of the primary traumatic event that represents the basis for the current dysfunctional functioning of the client. The effect of the therapy was assessed by the client through subjective self- assessment of her current psychological functioning. According to the results, the application of EMDR therapy indicated significant positive outcomes after the successful resolution of the primary traumatic event. On the basis of the gained results, we may conclude that EMDR therapy is an efficient psychotherapy approach to alleviate symptoms associated with childhood maltreatment.
