Contact hypersensitivity to corticosteroids in seborrheic patiens
Patients with contact allergy to corticosteroids are generally present with a chronic dermatitis that is exacerbated by and fails to respond to corticosteroid therapy. We followed 60 patients, 20 with seborrheic dermatitis (SD) treated with topical corticosteroids, 20 with seborrheic dermatitis without previous corticosteroid treatment (CT) and 20 healthy controls. The patch test was performed in all 60 patients with standard series of allergens and local corticosteroids. In all patients we looked for mite Pityrosporum ovale by scarification method. Pityrosporum ovale was detected in 17 (85%) SD patients 14 (70%) in SD with previous CT and 5 (25%) healthy controls.Patients with constantly eczematous skin disease, who do not improve or deteriorate during topical corticosteroid therapy, contact allergy to them should be suspected and patch test should be preformed.
